Physiology 2130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Pulmonary Circulation, Pulmonary Artery, Circulatory System
Lecture: 030 The Cardiovascular System
Learning Objectives
● Function of the CV system
● Role as a transport system
● General organization
● Total blood volume and blood volume distribution
● Anatomy of the heart and valves
● Myocardial cells
● Origin of self-excitability
Functions of the CV System
● Role as a transport System
○ Hemostatics
■ Maintenance of the internal environment
■ Transport oxygen and nutrients out to the tissue
■ Transport carbon dioxide and waste products from the tissue to the
external environment
■ Regulates body temperature
● By transporting excess heat out of the body or conserving heat
● Divert blood from the skin and send it to the core
● Sweat
■ Transports and distributes hormones and other substances within the
body
● The components of the transport system includes
○ Central pump (heart)
○ Closed system of blood vessels
■ 2 circulatory systems (separated by the heart)
○ The fluid medium (blood) through which various substances are transported
General Organization
1. Two circulatory systems
● Pulmonary circulation
○ Blood goes to the lungs from the heart
○ Pick up oxygen, dump off some carbon dioxide (but not all)
○ Right atrium -> right ventricle -> pulmonary artery -> pulmonary capillaries
■ Picks up O2 as it passes through the lungs and drops of some CO2
■ Capillaries are the gas exchange vessels
■ Gas exchange in the lungs is extremely effective (blood leave as 95%
saturated in O2)
● Systemic circulation
○ Sends blood out to the rest of the body (other than the lungs)

Document Summary
Total blood volume and blood volume distribution. Transport oxygen and nutrients out to the tissue. Transport carbon dioxide and waste products from the tissue to the external environment. By transporting excess heat out of the body or conserving heat. Divert blood from the skin and send it to the core. Transports and distributes hormones and other substances within the body. The components of the transport system includes. 2 circulatory systems (separated by the heart) The fluid medium (blood) through which various substances are transported. Blood goes to the lungs from the heart. Pick up oxygen, dump off some carbon dioxide (but not all) Right atrium -> right ventricle -> pulmonary artery -> pulmonary capillaries. Picks up o2 as it passes through the lungs and drops of some co2. Gas exchange in the lungs is extremely effective (blood leave as 95% saturated in o2) Sends blood out to the rest of the body (other than the lungs)
