Homeostasis- the maintenance of relatively stable conditions in our
internal environment
Body is divided into intracellular fluid compartment(ICF) and
extracellular fluid compartment (ECF)
- ECF is further divided into interstitial fluid compartment (fluid
bathing cells) and plasma (watery portion of blood)
Fluid proportions in the body
- ICF makes up 22% of total body water
- ECF (interstitial) makes up 26.4% of total body water
- Plasma (ECF) makes up 6.6% of total body water
Plasma
Pale, yellow fluid consisting of 92% water and 8% other substances
(e.g. proteins, ions, nutrients, gases, and waste)
A colloidal solution (liquid containing suspended substances that do
not settle out of solution)
