List and describe the seven major functions of the kidney. Although the kidney functions to remove waste from the body, its more important function is the regulation of salt and water balance: regulation of extracellular fluid volume and blood pressure. Regulates ecf volume according to blood pressure: regulation of osmolarity. Recall osmolarity of body fluids = 300 mosm: maintain ion balance, maintenance of body ph. To prevent unnecessary protein/cell degradation: excretion of wastes. When proteins are recycled, waste products in the blood are excreted in the urine: production of hormones e. g. epo, gluconeogenesis. Label the major anatomical features of the kidney and review the function of these structures. Label the parts of the nephron the nephron is the functional unit of the kidney approximately 1 million nephrons per kidney composed of 2 major structures: renal corpuscle: where filtration of blood occurs. Composed of the glomerulus and bowman"s capsule: tubule: where the filtered fluid is processed (decides what gets excreted)
