Its important to maintain this internal environment so the cells can function properly. Internal environment: all the fluids that your cells are being bathed in e. g. extracellular fluid, does not include your cells. Cells are merely contained in the internal environment: environment your cells are surrounded by, cells needs to function properly for you to function as a living organism, cells function = organism functions. Internal environment has to be maintained in order for cells to function properly (cid:498)milieu int rieur(cid:499) (claude bernard, 1813-1878) = internal environment: the maintenance of this constancy by physiologic mechanisms. Homeostatic mechanisms are dynamic, self regulatory mechanisms that involve almost all organs and tissues in the body.
