Ancient greeks: love between same-sex partners was seen as superior because it was seen as a relationship between equals (man is superior to women; man + woman = inferior) Monotheisms: homosexuality is immoral and homosexuals are to be punished. Political or social movement not based on interests but identity. Community of people identifying similarly; culture with its own attitudes and norms. Identity politics: seek status as different but equal to the mainstream; challenging status hierarchy. Sexual orientation: sexual or emotional attraction to other people, crucial to identity. Gender identity: not related in any systematic way to sexual orientation, usually consistent with the one assigned at birth, transgender: opposite of assigned sex. Trans contains transsexuals, cross-dressers and gender atypical. Intersex people with chromosomes that do not correspond with male/female. A currently contested term: queer : means unnatural, eccentric, weird, used my mainstream people as term of abuse, appropriated by community; either celebrated or discouraged.
