Good: state of mind/feeling that we say the world is good things that are going on in the world right now are good and going in the right direction. Right: the right way to do something, the moral thing to do. Utility: happiness, well-being, pleasure, preference satisfaction (we want to choose it and feel better because of choosing it) Obey the law if and only if doing so will produce greater happiness than disobeying. Three parts of utilitarianism: theory of the good (utility, happiness, commitment to equal concern. Everyone counts for one and no one counts for more than anyone else. There were still social problems at this time (including slavery and subjection of women) so not everyone actually counted for one: requirement of maximization: duty to produce as much good as possible. Want to make decisions based on what will maximize human happiness.
