This term is meant to take a society based approach looking at canadian politics. When taking an institution based you are looking at the different branches of government, but when the approach is society based it discusses people. When talking about the state recognizing groups we are talking about the distribution of powers as well. Section 35 of the constitution is an example of recognition with aboriginal peoples. 1. regional cleavage= lots of conflict when it has to do with geography and regions ex. south/north. Ethno-cultural cleavage(multiculturalism)= 1971 multicultural act, every culture should have equal rights. This vision flows out of the regional cleavage. Canada was a nation founded on an agreement of provinces. A desire for de-centralization, advocates for this visions believe that each province should remain autonomous.
