Society based approach moves away from institutions and looks at people and place in political order. People = more intense - the state has to decide whose interests and claims it"s going to recognize. Some interests will be heard and others will not. Political recognition of some groups but not others. Politics and state will touch political justice, self worth and identity. Politics inevitably decides way it responds to clevages matter - which interests/people matter and which don"t. Recognition is power - political recognition and power are linked. If group/interest gets attentions from state they are more politically powerful. Not talking about specific policies but different visions of canada. Argue about how canada as a political structure should be ordered. Earliest days of canada has experienced grievences b/c of regions. Regionalism from both west and east making different demands upon the. Quiet revolution = new form of quebec nationalism. Quebec wants to be recognized as a distinct society.
