It matters to us whether the ends we value in life - our conception of the good - are realized. This self interest impacts how we conduct ourselves. Parties in the original position motivated by self interest. Imposing veil because he thinks this is the way humans really are. We want to live in a society regulated by principles that are fair to all. Demonstrated by the original positions throughout experiment itself. We are free, equal with a sense of justice. People are entitled to make claims on society/institutions. We can separate ourselves from the good in public life. We are equal in the sense we have the capacity to participate in society. We know that our conception of the good will likely differ from others. Due to their differing life experiences and upbringings people will value different things. Recognize everyone will have a conception of the good, but they will differ.
