Document Summary

A researcher is recoding from a visual cell. The cell shows maximum firing to a spot of light at a particular area on the screen. A slit of light decreases the firing rate. Can reverse, you can see two different cues for depth. Need 2 eyes on front of head, 65 mm apart. Some animals such as flatfish cannot use retinal disparity to perceive depth. Relative size (larger image in a picture should be closer to you than a smaller image) Overlap (when objects overlap, one interrupts the contours of the other, then we assume that the completed object is closer to us) Linear perspective (straight lights recede as we go into a distance, e. g. art - vanishing point, objects closer to the vanishing point are further away) Texture gradient (as objects fade into the distance, they tend to increase in density, eg. field of sunflowers) Re-scale the size of objects so that they remain constant at any distance.
