Coordination of activity not present until 5 months (both hands 7 months) Child can imitate, but only if actions just produced. If mom makes a funny face, child will copy. Importance of sensory (visual) feedback: e. g. , stick tongue out, mom sticks out tongue but child will not copy. 18-24 months: efficient imitation, representational thought. Represented by some symbol: object permanence at 24 months. Realize that object is still there even if it goes out of your visual range.
