Cognitive development: development= change in abilities over time. Influenced by nature (maturation) and nurture (learning: nature determines range and nature chooses the point within range, theory #1: stage-like development, discontinuous stages separated by rapid growth -> qualitative, ex. Caterpillar turning into butterfly: theory #2: continuous development, smooth, continual change -> quantitative, ex. Small fish getting larger as they grow: normative vs. Individual development viewpoint: normative= look for typical sequence of change, consistency, cross-sectional look at averages of different ages, longitudinal follow one age group and follow through time. Individual= look at individual: 100-200 billion neurons at birth, neurons not made after second trimester.
