Document Summary

The question addressed in this study is whether or not the motor system has a functional role in tool recognition. The researchers hypothesized that the motor system does indeed have a functional role in tool recognition. Method: a group of mainly right-handed participating college students were asked to name coloured photographs of tools and animals as quickly as possible. The pictures stayed on the screen until it was correctly named. Errors were manually recorded and removed from data analysis. The objects were oriented with either the head of an animal or handle of a tool to the left or the right. Participants constantly squeezed a foam ball with a different hand in either the block containing tool pictures or containing animal pictures. The independent variable was the pictures of either tools or animals, and the dependent variable was the speed of correct picture naming.
