Document Summary
Formal statements that explain how and why certain events are related to each other. Example: theory is that alcohol influences human behavior. Hypothesis: as alcohol level increases hand eye coordination decreases. Va riables: the factor that the scientist wants to explore. Anything that varies can be a variable. O perational definition: how you are specifically going to define your variable. Example: aggression could be defined in a study as the number of punches or number of verbal threats. Sa mple: part of the population that the researcher actually wants to study or make inferences about. This is who you are going to include in your study. A sample is a subgroup of a larger group. Good samples are random and representative (allows us to make good conclusions!) Example: want to study adult canadian population but that would be hard to do.
