Therapeutic relationship of client & therapist; ie the therapist is there to help. Use of therapeutic techniques; techniques vary widely, depends on therapist"s perspective in psychology. Psychologist: phd or psyd with 5+ years training in different therapeutic/assessment techniques. Psychiatrist: hold a medical degree (md) prescribe drugs, also trained in psychotherapeutic techniques. Exam: as soon as it is said the person is prescribing drugs, you know they are a psychiatrist. Explain the term insight and why it is the goal of psychodynamic therapies. Conscious awareness of the psychodynamic forces underlying one"s current issues. Allows one to adjust behaviour, act according to the current situation, rather than repeating past. The psychoanalyst"s main duty is to help the patient achieve insight. Briefly describe the methods of free association and dream. Free association: therapist sits out of sight of the patient, patient is on a comfortable couch, client reports all thoughts, feelings and images that enter their mind.
