Recall: the distinction between neurosis and psychosis prior to dsm was: anxiety vs. thought disturbance. Used to be considered anxiety disorders but not anymore since they are not considered disorders on their own: Expressed as an actually physical problem maintained by psychological reasons. Dissociative disorders: dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue, dissociative identity disorder: more than 1 personality for themselves. Schizophrenia: loss of touch with reality: hearing things that aren"t there and unusual thought patterns, normal personality though, not multiple personalities this is did not schizophrenia. Personality disorders: difficult to diagnose because they only appear sort of different , perceive things and think of things different ways. A disorder characterized by a disturbance in mood (affect) rather than thought: high mania, low depression. Patient experiences only the despair of depression. Not crazy just an alteration of mood. Patient swings from one extreme to the other.
