Ego: conscious level, reality principle, functions to keep impulses of id in control, delays gratification, imparts self control. Superego: morality aspect of personality, controls impulses of id with external control. Ego cannot always control id = conflict: anxiety when impulses of id threaten to get out of control. Defense mechanisms: weapon of ego, are distortions of reality, operate unconsciously, cause maladaptive behavior. Repression: thought and wishes remain in unconscious, revealed in slips of the tongue, dreams. Sublimation: unacceptable impulses presented as socially desirable behavior, mask true feelings, wishes. Adult personality is function of progressing through these stages. Arrested development where instinct focused on particular area. Fixation compulsive cleanliness, rigid rules; or messy/dominant. Move from sexual attachment to opposite-sex parent to identify with same-sex parent. Issue = importance of early experiences and emotional attachment.
