Psychology 2035A/B Lecture 4: Lecture 4 - Social Thinking and Social Influence
Document Summary
Lecture 4 - social thinking and social influence. We we engage in person perception, the process of forming impressions of others , we rely on five key sources of information: Snap judgements about others are those made quickly and based on only a few bits of information and preconceived notions: They are shortcuts that rely on automatic processing, and are used when we are not motivated to form an accurate impression of another person. Systematic judgements require more controlled processing and tend to occur when forming impressions of others that can affect our happiness or welfare. Efficiency and quickness is not there however, it normally leads to a more accurate result. Attributes - judgments about the causes of our own and other people"s behaviour and outcomes. Internal attributes - infer that people"s behaviour is caused by their characteristics. Use internal attributions when we are successful. External attributes - infer that aspects of the situation cause a behaviour.
