The strong emotional bond that emerges between infant and caregiver. Secure or healthy attachment is a typical and important part of emotional development. Learning theorists: attachment is learned as a function of receiving rewards. Secondary reinforcer: an object that acquires rewarding value because of its association with primary reinforcer. Secondary reinforcers (mom) eventually become rewarding outside of the context of feeding. Baby monkey was taking away from parents and isolated in cages with 2 fake mothers. Observed that baby monkeys" daily behaviour and fearful behaviour over +165 days. Day to day: significantly more time spent with cloth mother. Infant mother attachment is not just about mom acquiring secondary reinforcer characteristics. Formed more of an attachment for cloth mother. This study is not ethical in today"s standards. Infant and caregiver are brought together and bonded. John bowlby: attachment develops in a fixed sequence. First 2 months: infant emits signaling behaviours (smiling, crying) which brings caregiver to them.
