Child development: an area of study devoted to understanding the constancy and change from conception (prenatal) through adolescence (textbook says this is age 25) Domains of development: physical, cognitive, emotional, social. Ex) first words: need motor control of lips and tongue, speaking now lets you interact with people on a whole new level, and learn about your world in a different way. Ex 2) a baby needs to be able to crawl before they can explore their environment and connect more neurons in their brain. Developmental psychologists usually focus on one period of development. However, often the concepts from one age group spills into over categories. An orderly, integrated evidence-based set of statements that describes, explains and predicts behavior. Q: why are they important: they guide and give meaning to what we see by providing us with an organizing framework for observations of children. During these 9 months, it is the most rapid period of change.
