Document Summary
Chapter 3 the psychology of police invesigaions. Forensic psychology plays an important role in the invesigaive process, such as in the collecion and evaluaion of invesigaive informaion, which is obtained from suspects through police interrogaions. Confession evidence is a valuable weapon during the prosecuion. In north america, a confession (usually) must be backed up by other forms of evidence. People who confess to a crime are more likely to be prosecuted and convicted than those who do not. One of the main goals of a police interrogaion is to obtain a confession of guilt from the suspect. Police oten use subtle, psychologically based interrogaion techniques (ex: lying about evidence, promising reduced sentences, implying threats to loved ones) Ofenders must oten be tricked into confessing. In general, interrogaion techniques taught in the uk are far less coercive than those used in north america primarily because courts in the uk have recognized the potenial problems associated with coercive interrogaion pracices.
