Document Summary

Week 7: children with speech and language differences. Relatively few people with communication disorders are completely unable to express themselves. Communication = interactive exchange of information, ideas, feelings, needs, and desires. Three elements: a message, a sender who expresses the message, receiver who responds to the message. Narrating children need to be able to tell a story. Explaining/informing children need to be able to interpret the explanations of others and put this understanding into words so that others will understand it too. Requesting children need to be able to communicate their wishes and desires in socially appropriate ways. Expressing children need to be able to express their personal feelings and opinions and respond to the feelings of others. Paralinguistic behaviours speech modifications (variations in stress, pitch, intonation, rate of delivery, pauses) and non-language sounds ( ooh, laughter) that change the form and meaning of a message.
