Some are extremely restricted in functioning; others have no major limitations on what they can do. Some appear no different than the typical child. Degree of disability may increase, decrease, or remain the same. A host of variables determine the effects of disabilities on a child and their educational needs: degree and severity of the impairment, age of onset, environmental context. Two categories under idea: orthopedic impairments, other health impairments. Orthopedic impairment = adversely affects a child"s educational performance; includes: impairments caused by a congenital anomaly. Clubfoot, absence of some member, etc: impairments caused by disease. Poliomyelitis, bone tuberculosis: impairments from other causes. Cerebral palsy, amputations, fractures or burns that cause contractures. Children with physical disabilities may have orthopedic impairments or neuromotor impairments.
