Self-report inventories: the big 5: costa and mccrae formed a theory based on their research that measured five higher order traits in research and clinical settings, five factor model of personality, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, openness, neuroticism. Personality theories: psychodynamic, freud, jung, alder, behaviourist, pavlov, skinner, bandura, humanist, rogers, maslow. Include a variety of theoretical models derived from the work of sigmund freud: all focus on unconscious mental forces that shape our personalities, well known psychodynamic theorists are, freud, jung, adler. Psychoanalytic theory: personality is governed by the unconscious forces that we cannot control, childhood experiences play a significant role in determining adult personality, personality is shaped by the manner in which children cope with sexual urges. 3 layers of awareness: conscious: material we are fully aware of, preconscious: material just below the surface of awareness, easy to recall, unconscious: material well below the surface but greatly influences behavior.
