Person perception: the process of forming impressions of others: occurs automatically. Smiling creates favourable impressions: as long as it appears authentic, body language. Flaw: most other cultures have been exposed to western media. Subject to context effects: order in which faces are viewed can skew perceptions, display rules, culturally determined rules about which emotions are appropriate to express. In collectivist cultures expression of strong negative emotion is discouraged. Same with cultures where modesty is highly valued: eye contact and gaze. In north america direct eye contact is valued: people who won"t make eye contact are seen as lying or untrustworthy. In some other cultures eye contact with superiors is considered disrespectful: personal space and touching, high-contact cultures. Stand close to each other, hold hands, hug: low-contact cultures. Larger interpersonal distance, touch less often: malamuth, different slow dancing norms in na and israel, na, direct body contact.
