Psychology 3139A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Otoacoustic Emission, Habituation, Arabic Numerals
Document Summary
Part 1: a brain for numbers - lecture by lien peters: Behavioral studies suggest that the ips is associated with impairments of basic numerical magnitude processing. Studies have shown that electrical activity in a group of nerve cells in the intraparietal sulcus spiked when, and only when, volunteers were performing calculation. H1: symbolic representations are mapped onto non-symbolic representations with the same magnitude format-independent. H2: symbolic and non-symbolic representations are distinct format-dependent. Non-symbolic: ratio effect: 2:1 ratio is less difficult than an 8:7 ratio, activation is higher when the mental number line is around 4 and lowest activation is around 10. Symbolic = non-symbolic: format-independent but does not imply format-independent processing. Focus on the patterns of activation and on the distinctiveness of these patterns between conditions. If format-independent similar representations over formats decision boundaries should transfer over formats. Number-people are not the only ones looking at ips!
