Lecture 6 (actually lecture 7) Freud: biological and psychological - personality structure begins with ‘id’ (pleasure principle  reflex and wish fulfillment) - around a year  displaces energy onto ‘ego’ (memory, cognition, thinking) – maintain quest for satisfaction (reality principle); secondary process - the id and the ego have no care one another until environment contains other  once child differentiates between can do and not allowed – realize they have to strategize with a responding environment (fill expectations of other to get what you want)  SUPEREGO - structure that learns the do’s/don’ts – internalizes normative expectations - forms appropriate categories for norms; conscience  guilt/share (become possible), ego ideal (what is good – good things/ought’s of life, potential image of what child thinks they ought to be like - formation of superego is complex  PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT o start off with LIBIDO focused in oral region – body is set up to consume – oral is divided into 2 components:  erotic  taking in, enjoying, self-orienting pleasure  sadistic  biting (child learns to gain pleasure from it) o But then LIBIDO moves from oral to anal region (most of it) because of the eating of solid food  why stimulation?  sadism and erotic – both create nerve stimulation that makes child preoccupied with behind o oral to anal mirrors id and ego o oral  anal  phallic o phallic  oedipal crisis (males)  Electra complex (females)  once in phallic region stimulated – you want to sleep with opposite sex parent  Incest taboo  oedipal – sexual relations with mother; mother has been nurturing other – source of pleasure and care – problem = dad, dad is more powerful, child recognizes a problem (fears castration and father), father owns mother sexually from child’s POV  represses mom as sexual other and identifies with father to resolve fear 0 then you can form superego (accomplished one you identify with same sex parent)  latency  ego growth  sexual ego gets repressed here  Electra complex – phallic crisis is different from the males – sees father as the sexual other, but displace sense of nurturance from mother and replace with sexual, competition for father with mother, but doesn’t deny mother and identifies with her for being object of male desire – hos to repress the mother, repress feelings for father – then identify with mother  more complicated for girl – doesn’t resolve stages as clearly - diffused ( sex and nurturing) – can’t differentiate – doesn’t form as strong of super ego – no clear concept of right/wrong, may not identify with mother completely – sense of morality is not as mature as males  don’t have and incapable of forming an adequate moral sense  couldn’t do it as competently as the male o personality and more characteristics are formed at early age o felt with superego, moral characteristics and personality is developed o superego = care of moral and completion of it by age 10/11/12 - Hartshore and May  character injury – is it true an honest kid is formed by age 11? (can we talk about honest personality) o found – through questionnaires – over 90% of students in high school were honest – took a group of students – gave test – found they cheated when teacher was out of the room o honesty can’t be talked about by superego – onl
