Sociology 2241E Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Social Constructionism, Sexual Orientation, Biosocial Theory
Document Summary
Socialization can shape an individual"s behaviour but it is constrained by sex. Children develop their gender in the mothers womb through hormones. People react to whether a child is a male or female based on genitalia when they are born. The way a child is treated will have an impact on them. Argue that sex and gender do relate to each other. Demonstrate how the biosocial theory of gender is constructed at the micro and macro level. Micro level - seeks to show how sex differences in hormone exposure shape gendered behaviour. Macro level - seeks to show how socialization and environment shape gendered behaviour. Demonstrates the relationship between hormones, socialization, and environment. Gender socialization is constrained by biological processes (hormones) that create natural behaviour predisposition. Biology is going to trump socialization in which factor influences gender behaviour more. Sample from the child health and development study. Years later - mothers and children were then contacted and followed up.
