Mile durkheim (1951 [1897]) demonstrated that suicide is more than just an individual act of desperation that results from a psychological disorder but that social forces strongly in uence suicide rates. Quantitative research because he examined the association between rates of suicide and rates of psychological disorder for different groups. Social solidarity: refers to 1) the degree to which group members share beliefs and values: the intensity and frequency of their reaction. Social structures: relatively stable patterns of social relations. Microstructures: patterns of relatively intimate social relations formed during face to face interaction (ex. family, friendship, co-workers) Macrostructures: overarching patterns of social relations that lie outside and above a person"s circle of intimates and acquaintances (ex. classes, bureaucracies, and power systems such as patriarchy) Patriarchy: the traditional system of economic and political inequality between men and women. Global structures: patterns of social relations that lie outside and above national level.
