Document Summary
Ted talk laurie davis: dinner makes a difference. Positive impacts of a family dinner: more involved in peoples lives, have a ritual dinner may cause the rest of your life to become ritualistic, regular family meals lower depression, pregnancy, increase self- esteem and grades. Children who have meals with their family 3 or more times a week, do better at everything. Foraging societies are nomadic groups of 100 or fewer people. (everyone was involved in raising children) Gender division of labour exists among foragers but is not associated with large differences in power and authority. Recent research on foraging societies calls into question many of functionalists" generalizations. Functionalism has its merits insofar as it was descriptive of family patterns in 15 years after world war ii: Canadians lived in marriage-couple families that gave way to the baby boom. Married women typically stayed home to raise children: this family pattern was historical aberration.
