Sociology 1020 Lecture 1: A Sociological Compass
Document Summary
Sociolog 1020 lecture 1 a sociological compass. Suicide is often regarded as a supremely antisocial & non-social act. Focus is on individual states of mind rather than on the state of society. Sociological perspective can be applied to the causes of suicide. Mile durkheim: at the end of the 19th century, demonstrated suicide rates were strongly influenced by social forces. Examined association between rates of suicide & rates of psychological disorder for different groups. Argued that suicide rates varied as a result of difference in degree of social solidarity in different categories of the population. Social solidarity: shared beliefs as a society, we are unified by our shared norms & values; which means as a collective conscience, we stand as one big interconnected community. Argued that suicide rate declines & then rises as social solidarity increases. Egotistic & anomic suicide: assumed perspective of suicide, fairly consistent, low social solidarity.
