Ego mediates between the two, make sense of who you are and where you fit. Essential for survival & stability of society. What we believe about ourselves, our society & the world is largely a product of our interactions with others. Shared key social characteristics (age, status, interests) Peer pressure (social force exerted to conform) Learn to be more independent, have different interests than their parents. More fast food, less grocery stores (in poor areas) More likely to get in trouble with the law. 1st source of info about social group. Teachers play critical role (their social location) and how they treat students. Lower expectations actually correlate with lower achievements.
