Berger: within sociology there are two major divisions : qualitative - the attachment/meaning to things; feelings, quantitative - all about numbers; stats, percentages; determine probabilities, ratios. Macro: big picture; groups of people; relationships between large institutions; quantitative. Ideal type: can never actually exist; summation of what berger sees sociologists as; What we delineate will not be found in reality in its pure form ; what we strive to be but will never actually be. Ideal marriage - approximation, average of what society thinks it is but in its pure form is not actually reality. Observers of the natural world; a lot of people view sociologists as being detached, cold manipulator of men, sardonic observers. Measurable; in order to have an outcome it must be measurable. 3 important & 4th - luton: describe, explain & conclusion, predict, critique** (in terms of existing social structures) Berger the primary interest of the sociologist is theoretical .
