To understand behavior you must look at the outside of individuals. Sociologists examine the impact of social forces on individuals. Social forces can include friends, fam, media, politics, law, economy, and religion. Identify general social patterns into particular individuals (society social forces shape us into kinds of people) Seeing the strange in familiar (giving up the idea that human behavior is simply a matter of what people decide to do, understanding society shapes our lives) Help us assess the truth of common sense. Help us asses both opportunities and constraints in our lives. Empowers us to be active participants in our society. Helps us live in a diverse world. From time to time, everyone feels like an outsider.
