Grew out of upheaval during industrial revolution. Scientific revolution (1550)- encouraged evidence based conclusions about society. Using evidence to make a case for a particular point of view. Galileo"s telescope supported copernicus"s theory the earth revolves around the sun. Democratic revolution (1780)- people were responsible for creating society. Human intervention was capable of solving social problems. The american and french revolution helped undermine that idea. They showed that society could experience massive change in a short period of time & people control society. Industrial revolution (1780)- created a host of social problems; attracted attention to social thinkers. This caused people from the country to move into the city to work long hours. People lost faith in religion, and reacted to filth/poverty with crime, revolutions, and war. Presented social thinkers with a host that social problems need a solution. Came up with the term sociology in 1838.
