Functionalist perspectives: social institutions exist because they perform vital functions for society: replacing members, socializing new members, producing and distributing goods and services, preserving order, providing a sense of purpose. Feminist perspective: liberal: focus on gendered inequalities, marxist and radical: focus on patriarchy and social class, multiracial: focus on the complex interaction between ethnicity, race, and gender. A woman can be a mother, wife, and flight attendant. Each status is composed of several sets of expected behaviors or roles. A wife is expected to act as an intimate companion to her husband and to assume certain legal responsibilities as co-owner of a house. Role set: wife (intimate companion, homeowner); mother (medical caregiver, emotional support provider); flight attendant (in-flight server, in-flight safety expert) Emotion management: involves people obeying feeling rules and responding appropriately to the situations in which they find themselves. Emotion labor: emotion management that many people do as part of their job and for which they are paid.
