Document Summary

Social issues are not weaknesses of specific individuals, but flaws of society . Taking individual cases in the media etc. and using them to stereotype the whole of that group of people. Social institutions: relatively permanent societal structures that govern the behaviour of groups and promote social order. Know this because to work in it you have to get educated about it, they have become more and more complex. Institutions are a really big part of our social structure. Everything has order, has a set of rules. The iron cage: people become so wrapped up in their position within the institution that they become part of the process -> don"t make decisions that are rational but that follow the rules. Mcdonaldization of society (continuation of weber"s bureaucracy) The idea that anywhere you go you have a set of consistent expectations for mcdonalds and that is being transferred into expectations of society as a whole.
