A society of only brain surgeons and lawyers are doomed. Meritocratic processes sort people into roles dependent on their talent and effort. We will accept that others who are smarter and work harder will end up doing better and achieving more. School is based on a progressive system (grade one to high school), there are certain things you have to have by the end of schooling that is common between all.
