Post-enlightenment = age of reason and rationality. Predictability repetition with the expectation of same results. Calculability focus on things that can be counted and quantified. Efficiency the best means to an end. These are also referred to as the (cid:862)mcdonaldization of ociety(cid:863) Benefits: production of more goods and services, availability to much larger portion of the population, cheaper alternatives to high priced goods, uniformity quality among goods and services which provides familiarity and stability to the consumer. Irrationality of rationality: when the rationalized systems create negative outcomes. Products that have monetary value, are standardized and are mass produced. Commodification = the process through which social relations are reduced to exchange relations; transformation of what is normally non-commodified into a commodity. This is done by assigning monetary value to it. Scientific management applies scientific principles and methods to labour management and involves creating divisions in the labour process.
