Document Summary
Harder to identify and study in comparison to industrial work. Good/high status service work is often composed of management and professional occupations w/ high income, and high levels of autonomy in the work place. Decent service jobs are composed of in person-services, where 75% of canadians are identified. Bad service jobs have grown over time, is often precarious, low-job security. Service work is characterized by difficult aspects that differ from industrial work. There is a dual responsibility w/ the potential conflict b/w what the employer and clients want (i. e. call center client; develop a relationship and take time, employer make as many calls as possible) Service work can be perceived to be dirty, degrading or dangerous. Many publically low status jobs are very important. There has become a limit to opportunities for resistance and autonomy in these jobs, moving towards the process of standardization and mcdonaldization.
