Sociology 1050A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Victim Support
Document Summary
In journals you will talk about what we did (describing), an application to concepts learned in class, and your reflection. The tsunami wiped out several small businesses that served as many people"s income. It is easy to have good intentions and make a plan, but it isn"t always what is best for the people living there: listen and ask them what to need instead of assuming what they need. Is it possible that our efforts to help can sometimes hurt: sometimes we do things that have unintended consequences. Asset based community development first talks about what is already working. If we talk about what is lacking, it implies that what they need is outside human and financial resources. It"s not that outside resources may not be necessary, but that we should proceed with caution instead of rushing in and pouring in outside resources, which is often not sustainable and can exacerbate problems if not done well.
