Examine the representation of racialized minorities in the mass media, and discuss why the images of minorities are created and continue to exist. Address the relation between the mass media and racial profiling. Discuss how crime is racialized and minorities are criminalized. Although it is a very stereotypical question many of us think of a male minority. They create an image and create a meaning to that image. Bell hooks: stereotypes, however inaccurate, are one form of representation. What we see in the media, we are exposed to certain types of representation. Communication is always linked with power and that those groups who wield power in a society influence what gets represented through the media. Stuart hall: the notion of representations is the idea of giving meaning. We give a meaning to an image when we create an image in media. Most of the time these images are distorted images.
