Consumerism is the preoccupation with the acquisition of goods to satisfy needs through material things. Has lead to addictions of consumerism/shopping: makes people feel better. Studies have found that you feel better the moment you walk into a mall: more women than men. Shopping has become a societal problem: the way goods are being consumed, we cannot continue at this rate. Spending has increased 30% however, happiness hasn"t increased. North americans uses up 30x more goods than what someone in a developing country will buy. Everything being produced has an environmental cost to it: people take up 20% of the earth yet consume 80% of the natural resources on the earth. Advertising has become the engine fuelling the consumerism of our society.
