Advertising has a huge impact on society, we don"t realize how big it is. Why is advertising studied in sociology: distribution of resources. Advertising agencies that hire creative talent, what they do all year is create advertisements for the super bowl: impact on society as a whole. Prior to internet, estimated we are exposed to 3,500 to 4,000 advertisements every day. Major contributor to cultural aspect of society: determinant of human behavior. Parents are first agent of social control, then teachers, then peers. Vivid images that define the shoulds of our human conduct. Extremist advertising for every different part of the body, not necessary (doing it just because we"re being told to do it) Defines roles in status (men vs. women, young vs. elderly) Something that has an important place in our life.
