In our hypotheses or theoretical models, causality flows from independent to dependent. Keep in mind: in observational studies, we observe correlations. Not our focus in 2205; we start with already-collected data. That part of stats is called study design. We want to study something about some population. But we cannot survey the entire population, we must select a sample. Population- all cases we are interested in understanding. Sample- a carefully selected subset of the population. Sometimes referred to as data reduction or eda. Possibly 3 or more together: multivariate but rarely done in practice. But we asked a research question about the population, we don"t really care about the sa. Hence, ste0p 2, inference, methods for generalizing patterns from sample to population. That is, we infer information abut population from the sample. Use math to estimate the variability of possible samples. Percentages- add up to 100% easier to see patterns.
