We as children in the family learn the norms and values in society. It is in families where children learn how to become members of society: sociological approaches to the family . In the 1900s during the industrial revolution, families were larger in comparison to today. With the uncertainty of labour, parents became dependent on their kin leading to extended families. Emergency care, food and housing could be provided by immediate family members. In the 1950s, eventually nuclear families began to form. Dominant theory was structural functionalism and analyzed how the family fits in w/ society. Talcott parsons stated that the family had two functions; The nuclear family was considered the social norm. In the 1960s, sociologists began to realize that the experiences of the middle and working-class families were very different.
