Children were infants until they were 7 or 8, then took on the role of little adults. They worked on the farms with their parents (family-based economy); while the work was never done. High infant mortality rates, resulting in less of an emotional attachment. Kids began to work alongside their fathers in factories, were free when work was done. Got married really early and started their own families (adolescent/teen years) School became mandatory up until age 14 (now 16) A need for more educated young people to have a meaningful life. Never used to be a real transition between childhood and adulthood. Encouraging children to purse studies after age 16. Took pressure off children to contribute to family income, resulting in more leisure time for young people. Individuals are more attached to their parents than ever before. Also happens because people are having less children. More young adults are living with their parents than ever before.
