Lecture 12 paid and unpaid work in families. Families do not operate in a vacuum unaffected by the nature of society. So when looking at work and families it is important to consider societal changes and trends. There has been a decline in the goods producing sector of the economy and an increase in the service producing sector since ww2. There has been an increase in self-employment. There has been a decline in secure employment, a decrease in mean wages, and poor-quality job growth. The growth in part-time employment has meant that many workers now must take on multiple jobs. Probably the most significant change in the last century is the employment of women outside the home. It is difficult to predict how the covid-19 pandemic will influence the nature of work in the future as more people are moving out of the workplace and working from home.
