Sick role (talcot parsons): a concepion of illness as comprising a set of responsibiliies and modes of expected behaviour. Rights and obligaions: exempion from social responsibiliies, a responsibility to get beter, an expectaion that the sick person will seek outside medical care and follow any prescripions or advice. Criicisms of the concept: not addressing the issues of conlict and power, the sick are oten blamed for their sickness, dehumanizaion (being hospitalized, loss of dignity, the sick are not merely passive, not addressing chronic illness. Emphasis on the socio-cultural aspects of the discipline"s approach to physical, objecively phenomena. Culture shapes the aitudes toward disease and wellness. Our culture, not our biology, dictates which illnesses are sigmaized and which are not, which are considered disabiliies and which are not: ex: mental disorders, aids, and skin disorders, homosexuality as a disease" in past/in some socieies.
