Document Summary

For every word we each have different perception of it mentally. In theory all things linguistic are linked and associated with the brain. To say that the two elements of the linguistic sign are psychological and connected in the brain is to say that one triggers and influences the other mentally. The two elements of the linguistic sign are the signifier and signified. The linguistic sign is a link between a concept and a sound pattern and a sound pattern is the hearers psychological impression of a sound, its representation of our sensory impressions. (saussure, 66). This being said the signifier is the concept and the signified is the sound pattern or mental perception that is created and imprinted by the signifier. The specific psychological aspect of one element of the sign is sound images, it can be seen when we observe our own personal speech.
